Silverado slugs it out – Tested: 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD

This big rig is a bladder-buster.

Top off the tank and you won’t need to do it again for at least 1,000 km. If you are trying to put some major distance under the wheels on any given drive, this is good news. But even if you average 100 km/hr, that means 10 hours before a stop!

I don’t know about you, but that is longer than I can go without a ‘rest’ stop.

I’m not talking about some puny little economy car, not a hybrid or plug-in hybrid. I’m talking about a three-ton 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD pickup truck with a 6.6-litre Duramax diesel engine.

The sticker on the door jamb said it could tow up to 18,500 pounds with the hitch or 19,100 from a gooseneck.


Silverado High Country:  Work and play in luxury

Yet, in the tester’s High-Country trim, it comes close to being a luxury vehicle.

I say close, because while the interior accoutrements are fancy and upscale, once underway there are constant reminders you are driving a pickup, a really big and heavy one.

The Silverado HD is built right here in Canada, at GM’s massive plant in Oshawa. The facility had been shuttered briefly, in 2019. But, with the ever-growing demand for pickup trucks, it was brought back into service little more than a year later after a $1.5 billion investment. Only the crew cab versions of the HD are built here, the others come from a plant in Michigan.


There is a Silverado HD for every conceivable pickup need.

For 2024, it is available in 39 trim/mechanical levels with base prices ranging from $59,000 to $96,000. The base price is only the starting point. After adding options, the tester topped out at $113,824!

A friend asked, “who buys a $120,00 pickup?”

The facts shows that more than 35% of HD pickup buyers opt for the highest and most expensive trim levels. They spend a great deal of time in their truck and want comfort and convenience.

There are two engine choices for the 2024 Silverado HD, both displacing 6.6 litres.

  • The gasoline version produces 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque.
  • The optional turbocharged Duramax diesel puts out 475-horsepower and a hefty 975 lb. ft. of torque – up 25 and 65 more respectively from last year.

The six-speed automatic used for the gas engine has been dropped. Both engines are mated with a 10-speed Allison automatic transmission. In 2007, before its bankruptcy reorganization, cash-strapped GM sold Allison to The Carlyle Group and Onex Corporation for $5.6 billion. It had owned the company since 1929. Now, GM, Ford and Ram commercial trucks all use Allison transmissions!


For the 2024 model year, the HDs (2500 and 3500) receive a mid-cycle makeover.

Visually, the changes start up front with a new grill, fascia and headlights. The interior of the base WT (Work Truck) and Custom trim levels are carried over.

The LT, LTZ and High Country get a complete redo, with interiors lifted straight from the Silverado 1500. The cheap plastics that plagued the outgoing model are gone. The driver faces a 31-cm configurable digital instrument cluster. The tiny (15-cm) infotainment screen has been replaced by a 34-cm unit.

It is laced with technology including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and has Google’s Built in. Intuitive, it features crisp graphics and quick responses.


Silverado has all the tech for towing

In addition to more power from the diesel engine and a related increase in towing capacity, trailer towing technology has been increased. The blind spot monitoring system now includes the entire length of the trailer, and adaptive cruise control can be used while towing.


The Silverado HD is a gem on the road.

There is little noise from inside the well-insulated cab.

The low-end grunt from the turbocharged diesel is such that getting underway requires only a few ounces of pressure on the throttle. Passing and climbing hills are effortless with a drivetrain engineered to tow up to 45,000 lbs!

The Allison transmission is beautifully matched to the torque of the diesel engine. Shifts are smooth, progress seamless and the engine always in the meat of its power band.


Big Silverado surprises with superior fuel efficiency

Obviously, fuel efficiency isn’t a factor in HD pickups destined for work duty. In fact, Transport Canada does not require or publish ratings for this class of vehicle.

But I was pleasantly surprised at recording an average of 12.9 litres/100 km on a 300-km highway run. I’ve seen light duty pickups that struggled to get below 14/100 on the same route. Credit goes to the optional Duramax diesel. I should point out that option costs $10,995. Obviously, the extra towing ability and long-life expectancy help make that cost acceptable for those who regularly take advantage of its capabilities.

The ride is compliant, but the unladen rear end, with its solid axle and heavy-duty suspension, likes to jump around over anything more than minor road blemishes.

The test truck had the $440 Z71 package which brought twin-tube Rancho shocks and an ‘off-road’ suspension which contribute to the more rigid ride. If you don’t plan on off-road work, skip this option and your teeth and kidneys will thank you.

The turning circle is atrocious and bringing the truck to a sudden halt from highway speeds is a clear reminder of the size and weight of the vehicle.

With improved looks, more power and technology, the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD is poised to slug it out in the heavy-duty pickup wars.
