European Adventures in the Opel Caravan
Let’s rewind to 1962 when a wide-eyed 9-year-old (ahem) and his family decided to shake things up by moving to Rome. Little did we know, our trusty steed would be none other than the mighty Opel Olympia Caravan, a faithful companion through the twisting roads of western and eastern Europe.
Squeezing a family of seven into a station wagon is no small feat. It was like a game of human Tetris – two in the front, three in the back, and two brave souls daring to nap in the back end, hoping they wouldn’t wake up in a different country.
Seatbelts? This ain’t no Volvo!
Our Caravan became our home on wheels, chugging along from campground to campground with our belongings strapped to the roof like a giant luggage piñata. Inside, it was cozy chaos – a bit like herding cats, but with more snacks and less fur.
Arriving at our destinations was a well-oiled routine. The canvas tent would pop up like a colorful orange mushroom, housing the rowdy crew of five kids in a slumber party extravaganza.
Meanwhile, my resourceful parents would transform the flattened back seat into a makeshift luxury suite, complete with an army surplus Arctic sleeping bag fit for a polar explorer. Who needs a fancy hotel when you’ve got a station wagon with flair?
The Opel Caravan: where memories were made, laughter was shared, and personal space was a distant dream.
And let’s not forget the legendary adults-only escapades across Europe, where the tent was deemed unnecessary. Who knew our family road trips were a pioneer in the world of makeshift RVing?
So here’s to the vehicle that carried us through the rollercoaster ride of the swinging 60s – a true icon in the annals of family travel. Cheers to the Opel Caravan, the unsung hero of our unforgettable escapades across the European landscape!
